Ezzie's comment:
"Thanks big help so anything soluable is aq and anything insoluable is s? right? what about liquids and gas"
Response Details:
Solubility rule is the quickest way to determine the state.  Take this eq. for example:

PB(NO3)2 (aq) + 2KI (aq)  PBI2 (s)  + 2KNO3 (aq)

The first part of the reactant is aqueous because compounds containing Nitrate is soluble with no exception.  Potassium Iodide is also aqueous because the Iodine ion is soluble unless combined with Ag, Hg and PB.

On the product side, Lead Iodide is solid because Lead is one of the exception compound when formed with Iodine, which makes it an insoluble compound.  Potassium Nitrate on the other hand is aqueous as Nitrate is soluble with no exception when it is part of a compound.  hope this helps.
