  Si -- Z = 14
 
  n=1 -- 2
 
  n=2 -- 2+6 = 8
 
  n=3 -- 2+2 = 4
 
 so, Ne in valence shell, ie. n=3 is 4

Silicon (Si) has 4 electrons in its valenc shell
 
 
 n = 1 has 2 electrons 
  
 n = 2 has 8 electrons
 
 n = 3 (valence shell) has 4 electrons
 
Total number of electrons = 14
