Question Details:
Which compound in each of the following pairs would you expect to have the greater dipole moment μ ? why?
 
a) NaCl or HCl
b) HF or HCl
c) HF or BF3
d) (CH3)3 CH or ( CH3)3 CCl

Response Details:
a) NaCl - because it has a greater difference in electronegativity
b) HF - because it has a greater difference in electronegativity as to HCl
c) HF - because BF3 will have a total dipole that will get canceled out due to the 3d orientation (trigonal planar geometry of BF3)
d) (CH3)3CCl - because this 1 has a C-Cl bond which has a greater electronegativity difference as opposed to the last C-H bond in the first option.
