Question Details:
A student needed to nitrate benzoic acid. Benzoic acid is a solid at standard conditions so the student dissolved the benzoic acid in benzene and then added the nitric acid/sulfuric acid reagent system. When the student subjected the isolated product to spectroscopic techniques to verify that (s)he had successfully nitrated the benzoic acid (s)he found that the product was not consistent with nitrobenzoic acid (neither ortho, meta nor para). The spectroscopic data was consistent with a nitrated product.
A) Draw the skeletal structure of the nitrated product.
