Question Details:
This concept of force is of help mainly when dealing with forces that act over a short time, as when a bat hits a baseball.  This is called:
 
instantaneous, inelastic, elastic, pulse or impulse?

impulse.  When something strikes something else, for a split second it gives out an impulse, which in turn gives both objects momentum or both objects lose momentum, etc.
Don't just read this response and expect to understand everything.  Grab a pen and paper and work it out as you go along, it'll make your life much easier.

Impulse: The magnitude of the force mulitiplied by the time in which it acts, also defined as the change in momentum. This can be a measure of the damage that is applied to a particular body in a collision
