A 55.3 kg ice skater is moving at 3.94 m/s when she grabs the loose end of a rope, the opposite end of which is tied to a pole. She then moves in a circle of radius 0.792 m around the pole.
(a) Determine the force exerted by the horizontal rope on her arms.
(b) What is the ratio of this force to her weight?

(a) The force exerted by the rope is the centripetal force:

Fc = mv2/r = (55.3)(3.94)2/(0.792) = 1083.9 N

(b) Ratio:

Fg = mg = (55.3)(9.8) = 541.94 N

Fc/Fg = (1084 N)/(542 N) = 2.00
